VNC® Enterprise Edition 4.6 release notes
Introduction
Below are the release notes for version 4.6. You can also read the release notes for versions 4.5.x and earlier. There is also a list of known bugs in version 4.6.
VNC Enterprise Edition 4.6.3 - released 19th August 2011
VNC Enterprise Edition for Mac OS X
- FIXED: Connections can now be established to a Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) computer whose display is asleep (lower of the two sliders in the System Preferences > Energy Saver pane). Note connections cannot be established if the computer itself is asleep.
VNC Enterprise Edition 4.6.2 - released 11th August 2011
VNC Enterprise Edition for Mac OS X
- NEW: Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) support.
- Connections to VNC Server in User Mode can now be maintained, and new connections established, on switch out by turning off the
StopUserModeOnSwitchOutparameter (Mac OS X 10.6 or earlier only; not supported under 10.7 Lion). - Improved performance for connections to iMacs, and to headless servers running Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.
VNC Enterprise Edition 4.6.1 - released 8th March 2011
All Platforms
- FIXED: Mouse movement no longer appears jerky or affects performance when connected to Windows host computers.
- FIXED: Re-opening the Chat - VNC Server dialog now retains user names and distinguishing colors.
- FIXED: File transfer no longer occasionally fails due to issues assigning file permissions.
- FIXED: VNC Viewer no longer appears to offer authenticated connections to proxy servers. Note that support for proxy authentication may be the subject of a future release.
VNC Enterprise Edition for Windows
- FIXED: Changing the color quality of a host computer desktop running VNC Server in Service Mode with the Mirror Driver enabled (the default behavior) no longer blanks, or stops updating, the display.
- FIXED: Setting the VNC Server in Service Mode
LogandLogFileparameters now successfully logs to a file in a privileged directory.
VNC Enterprise Edition for UNIX and Linux
- FIXED: VNC Address Book no longer crashes if the Enter Master Password dialog is cancelled while exporting a protected connection.
VNC Enterprise Edition for Mac OS X
- NEW: The VNC Server
Monitorparameter displays a particular monitor rather than the whole desktop. - FIXED: Connections to Mac OS X host computers with multiple monitors now work however monitors are arranged.
- FIXED: Using chat no longer causes the display to flicker when connected to Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6 host computers. For 10.4 host computers, set the VNC Viewer
UseDisplayCaptureparameter tofalse. - FIXED: The Chat - VNC Server dialog now exits gracefully if VNC Server is stopped.
- FIXED: Setting the VNC Server
Logparameter to redirect logging output no longer overwrites the original log. - FIXED: VNC Server in User Mode now starts if the user's home directory is not on the local file system.
VNC Enterprise Edition 4.6.0 - released 20th December 2010

- NEW: Connections can be secured end-to-end using 256-bit AES encryption.
- NEW:
JPEGandJRLEencodings for the VNC Viewerpreferredencodingparameter compress pictures more efficiently for improved performance over low bandwidth connections. - NEW:
Zlibencoding for the VNC Viewerpreferredencodingparameter improves the performance of connections to Mac OS X computers running Apple Remote Desktop/Remote Management. - NEW: Separate private keys are automatically generated when VNC Viewer and VNC Server start.
- NEW: Multiple host computers can be specified at the VNC Viewer command line, and connections attempted in turn until one succeeds. Or all can be established at once using the
connectinparallelparameter. - NEW: Alpha-blended cursors are supported.
- NEW: VNC Server connection notification messages can be turned off.
- NEW: VNC Server notifies when chat messages are received if the Chat - VNC Server dialog is minimized.
- Streamlined file transfer mechanism and user interface.
- VNC Server can now be restricted to IPv6 network addresses for the host computer by setting the
InTransportsparameter to justIPv6. In addition, invalid values for this parameter now prevent connections. - Corrupt or missing private keys can no longer be regenerated from the UI.
- Printing formats have changed, and dependencies removed. See the Windows section for implications.
- VNC Server now warns if a password specified for the
VNC Passwordauthentication mechanism is shorter than six characters. - Blacklisting now only affects client computers whose users fail to authenticate, enabling utilities such as
pingto work. - Many dialogs and message windows have new and more consistent titles.
VNC Enterprise Edition for Windows
- NEW: Full Windows 7 support.
- NEW: Executable files are Data Execution Prevention (DEP) and Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR)-enabled for improved security on appropriate operating systems.
- VNC Enterprise Edition no longer supports Itanium processors.
- VNC Server for Windows in User Mode now displays a black screen when the host computer's desktop cannot be accessed, instead of terminating connections (for example, when a UAC prompt is displayed, or when the host computer is locked).
- Printing formats have changed. This means VNC Viewer 4.6 cannot print host computer files from VNC Server 4.5 for UNIX/Linux or Mac OS X.
- FIXED: Printing formats have changed. This means Standalone VNC Viewer 4.6 can now print host computer files from VNC Server 4.6 for UNIX/Linux or Mac OS X (but not VNC Server 4.5).
- FIXED: Command line parameters specified when starting VNC Viewer are now inherited (when a new connection is established using the New Connection toolbar button, for example).
- FIXED: Command line parameters specified when starting Listening VNC Viewer are now respected.
VNC Enterprise Edition for UNIX and Linux
- NEW: Fedora 11–13, Ubuntu 10.04 (LTS) and 10.10, and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Enterprise Desktop 10–11 support.
- NEW: The VNC Server icon can be hidden until a connection is established by setting the
DisableTrayIconparameter to1. - NEW: Under operating systems on which no VNC Server icon can be shown (such as Solaris), shortcut menu commands are available from a Commands button on the VNC Server dialog.
- VNC Enterprise Edition no longer supports Itanium processors.
- Versions of VNC Server for 64-bit architectures now depend on
libstdc++6rather than onlibstdc++5. - FIXED: Even if the VNC Server
BlacklistThresholdparameter is set to0to turn off blacklisting, an attacker can no longer make unlimited attempts to guess a user's password under system authentication. - FIXED: Closing the
vncconfigwindow no longer quits that application.
VNC Enterprise Edition for Mac OS X
- NEW: VNC Enterprise Edition can be installed silently from a script. See the Knowledge Base for more information.
- NEW: VNC Enterprise Edition 4.6 can be downgraded to an earlier version.
- NEW: The scroll wheel on a client computer mouse can be made to scroll Windows and UNIX/Linux host computer applications more appropriately by setting the
ScrollWheelAccelparameter toNo. - NEW: Unusual characters and symbols can be sent to host computers from the Special Characters dialog, available from the VNC Viewer Edit menu.
- The VNC Viewer and VNC Server user interfaces have been improved and made more consistent with those of other platforms.
- FIXED: Even if the VNC Server
